Snapshot #267: Debating Cloth Diapers

April 2, 2011.   Orem, Utah.  Four months to go until our baby girl lights up our life.  The debate is on:  Cloth vs. Disposable Diapers?  Cloth diapers seem almost romantic; meaning idyllic and optimistic.  However I am somewhat daunted by the practicalities of them.  What are your thoughts on the subject?

  1. The cloth ones are cute....but I say disposable all the way!

  2. Cloth diapers are romantic? Don't you remember the stinky diaper pail in the bathroom? Or washing out the dirty diapers in the toilet? Or the big pile of cloth diapers that needed folding? But I guess things have changed since then...you can pay for a diaper service and companies will collect your dirty diapers and wash them for you! And flushable liners that you throw in the toilet so you don't have to dunk and swish the cloth diaper! And specially shaped diapers that don't need folding. And snaps so the baby won't be poked by a safetly pin. I tried cloth, but opted for the convenient option and use disposable.

  3. Cute, romantic...what I mean is more ideal for the pocketbook and less disposable waste.

  4. I do both! I tend to use disposable in public, especially at church because I don't want to carry it around with me to every meeting. However, I love doing cloth at home, especially now that we are potty training! I don't really mind the mess and I even wash by hand (we don't have a washer and dryer). So, if you have any questions, just let me know! It's more work, but worth it to me!

  6. You have to wash them in the toilet? Um. That major step was omitted when i was getting the initial explanation on their disadvantages. maybe we should talk about this again.

  7. Maybe if you get a special washing machine just for diapers:) Otherwise, it just wouldn't be worth it to me. You do get pretty used to poop, but I have rarely had to scrub it out of anything and I would not want to.

  8. Thanks for all your comments! Definitely gives a girl something to really think about. Maleah, do you use a disposable liner for the cloth diapers?

  9. dear djw231, to wash poopy diapers in the toilet, simply hold the corner, then dip and swish to get most of the poop off. Then wring out the water (mmmm) and store in the diaper pail until washing in the machine. But if you use flushable liners, you avoid the toilet washing bit...just remove and flush the liner!

  10. I've heard they're really awsome. I would like to try them some day. I think..... maybe, maybe not..... I've heard the baby stays dry longer. A gal I used to visit teach used the new cloth diapers and the disposable when she was behind on laundry and swore by the cloth...
I did hear somewhere that the disposables have nasty chemicals that could cause cancer and may be causeing some of the problems we are seeing in the younger generation now... Who knows..

  11. Are you expecting or adopting? Either way I didn't know that you had a baby on the way!!! What happened to the communication lines and gossip chain??!!!

  12. Adopting! And very excited. Who knew that my post about Cloth Diapers would be by far the most popular?! I guess I'm finally blogging about something close to home. I greatly appreciate all of the comments. They have helped me work through some of my own skepticism about cloth diapers. I have decided that I am going to go for cloth, yet keep some disposables on hand for long days or long trips outside of the home. To start, I'm going to acquire the bare minimum in order to test the waters before any financial investment.
